Right to Information (RTI)
The Right to Information (RTI) Act, enacted in 2005, empowers Indian citizens to access information from public authorities, promoting transparency and accountability in governance. Under the Act, any citizen can request information from a public authority, which is required to respond within a stipulated time frame, typically 30 days.
The RTI Act applies to all constitutional bodies, including the executive, legislature, and judiciary, as well as bodies substantially financed by the government. Certain sensitive information related to national security, personal privacy, or sovereignty is exempted.
RTI serves as a powerful tool for combating corruption and ensuring that the government operates in a citizen-centric manner.
